Task Force on Economic Security
The ACCJ recognizes the important linkages between national security and economic security. Through its domestic efforts and international leadership, Japan is playing a key role in developing economic security practices that address new global challenges while preserving competition based on market principles.
The ACCJ has continuously supported and engaged with efforts by the GOJ to promote Japan- U.S. economic security in the context of further strengthening the U.S.-Japan partnership. This includes publishing Principles for Promotion of Economic Security in April 2022 as well as developing Viewpoints, public comments, and other advocacy pieces, and continually engaging on economic security issues including but not limited to the four major pillars outlined in the Economic Security Promotion Act passed in May 2022: strengthening supply chains; protecting critical infrastructure; promoting cutting-edge technologies; and ensuring the protection of information related to sensitive military and other technologies. The ACCJ has continually focused on ensuring that regulations are fit for purpose, appropriately scoped, and aligned with the fundamental objectives of economic security, including promoting economic growth and addressing state-sponsored risk.
As the Diet continues to consider further economic security-related reforms and affected Ministries develop implementing rules and regulations, including in areas such as research security and the economic security clearance system, the mandate of the Task Force is to closely monitor these developments as they unfold, coordinate ACCJ engagement and advocacy efforts, and recommend appropriate action to the Board of Governors as needed.
