ACCJ Calls For LGBTQ+ Rights Protections and Marriage Equality in Japan

The ACCJ issued an open letter on April 21 calling on the Government of Japan (GOJ) to legalize same-sex marriage and to protect those who identify as LGBTQ+ from discrimination. 

Japan is the only G7 country which has not instituted legislation that recognizes same-sex marriage and which lacks legislation prohibiting discrimination against sexual minorities.

We urge the GOJ to bring protection of LGBTQ+ rights in line with other G7 nations to bolster Japan’s ability to attract global talent, further Japan's economic potential, and create a more inclusive living and working environment. 

The ACCJ is a longtime advocate for workplace reforms and promoting diverse and equitable hiring practices in Japan. The ACCJ issued the landmark Viewpoint to Support the Recruitment and Retention of Talent by Instituting Marriage Equality in Japan, which has been updated every year since it was first adopted in 2018.
